The Portals
In various places around the the overlapping sections of the worlds there are anomalies that take the form of blue crackling energy with a clear space between them. Though this space, characters can see into the populated version of the world they're standing in, and if they walk through it, they will wind up in that populated world, though intangible and invisible, unable to interact with the world around them.
These portals can show up anywhere, and have a greater chance of showing up where a strong emotional connection is had to the area. There are a few exceptions, however. Portals will not show up in areas that are from other games, nor will they show up in a character's "home base" (aka, an area where the 'ghosts' of the populated world have no effect.)
Portals can also go to any time in the worlds they show up in. (Ideally, any time that canon covers.) Feel free to use this for canon sharing, or for your character to find out things about his or her own world he or she didn't know before!
There are plans to eventually have this portals allow for proper world exploration, with characters being able to properly return to their canon worlds. The characters themselves will affect this change. The method isn't set in stone because any method that the players decide on should work.
